Syllabus Rules and Pre-requisites

Curriculum Design: Outline Syllabus

  • The course focuses on specific topics in Corporate Finance, namely, capital raising, capital structure and debt maturity decisions, link between capital structure and short-selling, corporate governance and corporate control, and investment decisions.

    The course will be paper based with each session covering specific papers in an area of corporate finance research. This will be either theoretical or empirical and students will learn the main theories as well as how to carry out empirical research.

  • Distinction at the MRes or at an equivalent degree elsewhere.

Assessment: Details of Assessment

  • Assessment will take place over the term. The students will produce term paper(s).

Educational Aims: Subject Specific: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

  • The students should understand the key concepts of corporate finance: the financing decisions, monitoring decisions and the investment choices of firms.

  • Detailed theoretical knowledge of contemporary theoretical and empirical corporate finance theory.

  • On completion of this unit successful students will be able to:

     ·    Understand the:

    financing choices of firms (Capital raising, Capital Structure and Debt Maturity, links to corporate finance and short-selling topics);

    monitoring issues within companies (Corporate Governance and control topic);

    investment choices of firms (Investment decisions topic)
