Key topic areas of this course include the geopolitical dynamics of late Antiquity and pre-Islamic Arabia; change and continuity after the advent of Islam; the life of Muhammad & the rise of the early Islamic state; the origins of the Muslim community; the Arab conquests, civil wars & the rise of the Umayyad dynasty in Damascus. Politico-religious themes include the study of Arab-Muslim sources of order & authority, issues of leadership, legitimacy, justice, revolution, schisms. Socio-cultural themes include the question of Arabs & non-Arab Muslim converts;  'People of the Book': Muslims, Jews & Christians, life in medieval Islamic cities, and Islamic mysticism & the Sufi Orders. The course concludes by examining the rise of the Fatimid Empire & the defence of Sunni Orthodoxy.

This module aims to enable students to attain knowledge about the broad contours of the early Islamic period (c. 600-c. 1250), beginning with the pre-Islamic Arabic and ending with the establishment of Sunni Orthodoxy by the Mamluk period.

This module will enable students to develop their oral and written communication skills, as well as those skills that will enable them to use printed and electronic resources to understand and solve problems of interpretation. 
It will also enable students to learn how to link and how to differentiate between political, religious, ideological, cultural, social and economic forces in the past and to develop interpretations based on an understanding of how these forces operated.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to  

Express, in the form of an examination, knowledge of the key themes and events in the history of Islam c. 600-c 1250.

Undertake historical research appropriate to undergraduate degree level, which will include familiarity with the university library, its print holdings, its cataloguing systems and its electronic resources, and the ability to use these appropriately.

Think critically, in the above settings, about how religious ideals and patterns of devotion interacted with social, cultural and political forces in the formative period of Islam.

Demonstrate competence in written analysis through assessed essays and verbal interpretation through seminar debates.

Demonstrate competence in both written and oral analysis and interpretation.

Examination (60% of final assessment): students will take a 2-hour unseen exam, answering two essay questions in the main summer assessment period.

One essay (2500 words) that is due at the end of the term in which the module is taught. 

The department has established procedures to inform course convenors of any students in their courses who have special needs.
