Educational Aims: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

The course is designed to provide a flexible choice of postgraduate learning in a wide variety of environmental and ecological subjects, such as water resources, environmental pollution, terrestrial ecology, and other fields.  The students will acquire subject specific knowledge through research-informed teaching in lectures and workshops/practicals. They will acquire authoritative subject specific knowledge on one particular topic through the undertaking of a substantial research project. The range of subject specific knowledge that a student is expected to gain is dependent on the choice of taught modules and dissertation project.  The scheme will provide suitable training for the student to progress to a career in environmental, ecological or biological sciences through professional practice or admission to a Ph.D.

After successful completion of the scheme, students will be able to:

- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of specific examples of environmental or ecological science, such as ecosystem processes, population dynamics, hydrological processes, conservation biology, and others, depending upon the choice of modules.

- Appreciate the principles of quantitative scientific methods and their application.

- Demonstrate specialist, practical experience of cutting edge techniques through the completion of a research project within a research-active environment.

- Develop a robust scientific argument, formulate and test hypotheses, and assess contrasting scientific theories.

- Solve problems and make decisions by identifying, abstracting, critically evaluating and synthesizing relevant scientific information.

- Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, acting autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level.

General: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

Students will be expected to gain a range of transferable skills, including

- Literacy in mainstream word-processing, data management and analysis, and presentation software.

- Presenting information in verbal, electronic and hardcopy media

- Numeracy, including statistical analysis.

- The ability to critically analyse and interpret data.

- Knowledge of how to apply for research funding.
