Subject Specific: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills
Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of fundamental scientific issues underpinning a specific area of engineering.
General: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills
The level of indepth understanding is greater than an undergraduate course with the student expected to make value judgements relating to technologies and applications, and to justify these to peers and academic staff.  The research project will provide a student with postgraduate level investigative and analytical problem solving skills. 

The compulsory element of the course is:
Production of a piece of original research and subsequent submission of a dissertation that is based on any engineering area.
 
Industry based students will be admitted onto the MSc programme by demonstrating appropriate transferable skills required to undertake a work-based research project.
 
Normally by the end of the first month the student in conjuction with their supervisor will have produced a research project plan showing milestones etc., and at four and eight months a progress report.

Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of fundamental priciples underpinning specific areas of engineering research.

 

Skills associated with conducting research, ie planning, conducting and reporting research, synthesis of information, using a broad spectrum of scientific apparatus.
