Educational Aims: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

back to top

In this programme students will define and manage an independent research project. This will equip them for more sustained and original work at the doctoral level or for applied research positions in a range of organisations.

The programme aims are that Masters by Research students should develop:

·         an ability to initiate research projects and to formulate viable research questions;

·         a capacity to design, conduct and report independent and original research on a closely-defined project;

·         an understanding of the major contours of international research in the research area;

·         a capacity for critical evaluation of relevant scholarly literature;

·         well-developed and flexible problem-solving abilities appropriate to the discipline;

·         the ability to analyse research data within a changing disciplinary environment;

·         the capacity to communicate effectively the results of research and scholarship by oral and written communication;

·         an understanding of and facility with scholarly conventions in the discipline area;

·         a respect for intellectual integrity and the ethics of research and scholarship;

·         a capacity to cooperate with other researchers;

·         an ability to manage time in order to maximise the quality of research;

·         an ability to manage information effectively, including the application of computer systems and software appropriate to the student’s field of study.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

back to top

On successful completion of this scheme of study students will be able to:

demonstrate understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects as applied to both current and future developments in a sub-field of physics;

investigate and solve a significant practical or theoretical problem using their physics-related abilities;

demonstrate appropriate choices of research method and apply them to their problems, showing awareness of relevant ethical, social, professional and legal factors;

produce a fully referenced written academic report of their project activities appropriate to the field of physics.

General: Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

On successful completion of this scheme of study students will be able to:

deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences;

demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level;

continue to advance their knowledge and understanding, and to develop new skills to a high level;

demonstrate ability to write in publishable style consistent with peer reviewed literature

plan, manage, evaluate and reflect upon a significant project over an extended period of time;

plan, conduct and report on a substantial piece of research, synthesise information, and use a broad spectrum of scientific apparatus;

demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring:

  1. the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
  2. decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations; and
  3. the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development.
